Vietnam/Cambodia -- July 2004
In July, 2004, my son and I traveled together through parts of Vietnam and Cambodia. Our journey began in the northwest mountain areas of Vietnam, in the town of Sapa which is only a short distance from China. We trekked through the mountains with a guide and three other travelers, staying in native villages. As the oldest, and by far the fattest member of our team, I am happy to say that I not only survived, but that I enjoyed the opportunity to lose 15 pounds while eating everything I wanted.
From Sapa, we returned to Hanoi where my touring was briefly interrupted for a trip to an international clinic for IV injections of antibiotics and fluids to combat a brief but violent attack of gastroenteritis.
Once cured, we continued to Saigon where we met a guide to take us through the Mekong Delta by car and boat.
Too soon, we left Vietnam and traveled to Siem Reap, Cambodia. Once again, we hired a guide and car to take us on a tour of the temples of Angkor Wat, Ankgor Thom, and other areas to the north. While not quite as rigorous as the mountains of Vietnam, the steps up into the various temples were not necessarily for the feint of heart.
